Ear Infections in Children
Ear infections are one of the most common illnesses at home, and they're also one of the presentations where homeopathy can be genuinely impressive. The right remedy, given promptly, can turn around an ear infection quickly and without the repeated courses of antibiotics that many children find themselves on year after year.
Understanding ear infections in children
Most childhood ear infections are middle ear infections (otitis media), where fluid builds up behind the eardrum following a cold or upper respiratory infection. They are most common in children under five, whose shorter, more horizontal Eustachian tubes make drainage harder.
Not all ear infections require antibiotics. Many resolve on their own, and in countries where watchful waiting is standard practice, antibiotic prescribing for childhood ear infections has reduced significantly without any increase in complications. This is good news for families who want to try a gentler approach first.
That said, always seek medical assessment if your child has significant hearing loss, is under 6 months, has discharge from the ear, or seems very unwell. Homeopathy works well alongside medical monitoring, and the two approaches are not mutually exclusive.
The homeopathic remedies for ear infections
Belladonna, for sudden onset with intense heat
When an ear infection comes on fast, often after getting cold or wet, and the ear and surrounding area feel hot and throbbing, Belladonna is the first remedy to consider. The child has a flushed face, may be feverish, and is in obvious pain. The onset is sudden and the heat is intense. This is the most common presentation in young children and Belladonna often works quickly when the picture fits.
Chamomilla, for the child who is beside themselves with pain
When the pain is unbearable and the child is inconsolable, screaming, wanting to be carried and nothing satisfies them, Chamomilla addresses both the pain and the state of the child. One cheek may be red and the other pale. The child is furious and hypersensitive. This is also the teething picture, and the two often coincide in young children.
Pulsatilla, for recurrent infections and bland discharge
The Pulsatilla ear infection child is clingy and weepy rather than furious. They want to be held and comforted. There may be discharge that is bland and yellowish-green. This remedy is particularly important for children who get recurrent ear infections, often following colds, and fits the gentle, affectionate Pulsatilla constitutional type.
Hepar Sulph, when infection is established
When the ear infection is more advanced, with obvious pus and extreme sensitivity to touch and cold, Hepar Sulph is indicated. The child cannot bear anything near the ear and screams at the slightest touch. Very chilly and better for warmth in all forms. Hepar Sulph in low potency can help bring an abscess to a head; in high potency it can help reabsorb it.
Addressing the pattern, not just each episode
If your child has had three or more ear infections in a year, the individual episodes are only part of the story. The deeper question is why their system keeps being susceptible. Constitutional treatment looks at the whole child, including their immune history, their temperament, any history of antibiotics, and their overall health pattern, and addresses the underlying vulnerability.
This is where I see some of the most significant results in clinic. Children who were having repeated ear infections and repeated antibiotic courses can, with the right constitutional treatment, go an entire year without a single episode.

Supporting immunity between episodes
Alongside constitutional treatment, supporting immune health between episodes reduces susceptibility. The Immune Boost blend is something I recommend to many families navigating recurrent ear infections as part of a broader strategy.
