It's Hayfever Season: Your natural alternative
For those who suffer from hayfever, spring is bittersweet. The warmer weather and longer days are wonderful, the itchy eyes, sneezing fits and constant runny nose, less so. If you're tired of relying on antihistamines that leave you foggy and drowsy, homeopathy offers a genuinely effective alternative that works with your body rather than suppressing its response.
What's actually happening in hayfever
Hayfever (allergic rhinitis) is an immune overreaction to airborne allergens, typically pollen, but also dust mites, mould spores and animal dander. Your immune system identifies these as threats and mounts a response: histamine is released, causing the familiar cascade of symptoms.
Conventional antihistamines block the histamine response, which helps in the short term but doesn't address why the immune system is overreacting in the first place. Homeopathy works differently: it aims to regulate the immune response at a deeper level, reducing the hypersensitivity rather than just masking the symptoms.
The key homeopathic remedies for hayfever
Nat Mur — the most common hayfever remedy
If there's one hayfever remedy I prescribe more than any other, it's Nat Mur. The picture is distinctive: watery, egg-white discharge from the nose, violent sneezing (often in the morning), and eyes that water constantly. The discharge is bland, it doesn't burn or irritate the skin. There may be a loss of smell and taste, and the lips are often dry and cracked.
Nat Mur people tend to be private, to dislike fuss, and to hold their emotions in. They are often worse at the seaside and worse for sympathy. If you recognise this profile, Nat Mur is likely your constitutional hayfever remedy.
Apis Mellifica — when the eyes are the main problem
When hayfever affects the eyes more than the nose puffy, swollen, red, stinging eyelids that feel better for cold compresses, Apis is the remedy to consider. The swelling can be dramatic, and everything feels hot and inflamed. Better for cold; worse for warmth in any form.
Allium Cepa — burning discharge that irritates
Named for the onion (and the symptoms are exactly what you'd expect from chopping one), Allium Cepa is indicated when the nasal discharge is acrid and burning, irritating the nostrils and upper lip, while the eye discharge is bland and doesn't cause irritation. Profuse sneezing, worse in warm rooms, better in open air.
Euphrasia — when the eye discharge is the irritating one
The opposite of Allium Cepa: here the eye discharge is burning and irritating while the nasal discharge is bland. Red, inflamed eyes that water constantly. Often better in open air. Euphrasia tincture is also used as an eye wash for irritated eyes.
Sabadilla — for violent, uncontrollable sneezing
When sneezing is the dominant symptom, violent, prolonged sneezing fits that leave the person exhausted, Sabadilla is worth considering. Often with itching of the soft palate and nose, and a strong sensitivity to the smell of flowers or fresh-cut grass.
The Hayfever blend — seasonal support made simple
Hayfever often hits fast and hard, and reaching for single remedies mid-sneeze isn't always practical. The Hayfever blend is formulated to address the most common symptom picture and is something I recommend having stocked and ready from the beginning of spring.

Constitutional treatment for chronic hayfever
If you suffer from hayfever every year and are looking for something more lasting than managing symptoms season by season, constitutional homeopathic treatment is worth exploring. Working with a homeopath to address the underlying immune hypersensitivity rather than just the seasonal flare, can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms over time, and in some cases resolve them altogether.
The best time to start constitutional treatment is actually between hayfever seasons, when the immune system is calmer and more responsive to deeper work.
