Belladonna: The Remedy for Sudden, Intense and Hot
Belladonna is one of those remedies that announces itself loudly. There is nothing subtle about a Belladonna state, the heat is intense, the onset is sudden, and the person in front of you looks visibly unwell in a very particular way. Once you know the picture, you'll never miss it.
What is Belladonna?
Belladonna is made from, Atropa belladonna. In homeopathic form it acts on conditions characterised by sudden, intense inflammation with heat, redness, throbbing and congestion. It is one of the most important acute remedies in the entire materia medica, and it belongs in every home kit.
The keynotes of Belladonna
There are three words that sum up Belladonna: sudden, intense, heat.
Whatever the condition, it comes on fast. An hour ago the child was fine; now they are burning up, glassy-eyed and clearly unwell. The affected area is hot, red and throbbing. The face is flushed, the eyes are bright or glassy, and the pupils may be dilated. There is often a high fever with very little thirst, which surprises people.
The person may be restless, delirious in high fever, or oversensitive to light, noise and touch. Even the hair being touched on the head can cause distress. This hypersensitivity, alongside the sudden onset and intense heat, is the hallmark of Belladonna.
When I reach for Belladonna
High fever
Belladonna is one of the primary fever remedies, particularly when the fever is high, comes on suddenly, and the child has a flushed face, hot dry skin, and bright or glassy eyes. They may be drowsy but easily startled. There is radiating heat from the body. This is the remedy I think of when a parent calls me saying their child went from fine to 40 degrees in two hours.
Ear infections
Sudden, throbbing ear pain with intense heat is a classic Belladonna presentation. The pain comes on fast, often at night, and the ear and surrounding area feel hot. The child is in obvious distress and may be holding or pulling the ear. Belladonna can work remarkably quickly in this picture, often bringing relief within the hour when well indicated.
Sore throat
A bright red, inflamed throat that comes on suddenly, with difficulty swallowing and a sensation of heat and throbbing, often alongside fever. The tonsils may be visibly red and swollen. Better for warmth, worse for cold drinks.
Headaches
Throbbing, pounding headaches that come on suddenly, often with flushed face and sensitivity to light and noise. The pain is often worse for movement, stooping and jarring. Better for pressure, worse for light.
Mastitis, early onset
As covered in the breastfeeding post, Belladonna is the first remedy for mastitis when the breast becomes hot, red and throbbing very quickly alongside fever. Given early, it can prevent a full mastitis episode from developing.
What makes Belladonna worse and better
- Worse for: touch, jarring, noise, light, cold drafts, lying down, afternoon
- Better for: rest, sitting upright, warmth, pressure on the painful area
How to use Belladonna
Belladonna is a fast-acting acute remedy. In high fever or acute ear infection, it can be given every 15 to 30 minutes in the acute phase, spacing out as improvement comes. If there is no improvement after three or four doses, reconsider the remedy choice. Belladonna is available as part of the single remedies range and is included in several of the home kits.
It is also a key ingredient in the Fever blend, alongside other complementary fever remedies.
