Your Postpartum Support
The weeks and months after birth are some of the most physically and emotionally demanding of a woman's life, and also some of the most under-supported. So much attention goes to the pregnancy and the birth itself that the postnatal period can feel like an afterthought, both in mainstream care and in the wellness world. It shouldn't be. What happens in those early weeks sets the foundation for a mother's health for years to come.
This is an area I care deeply about, and homeopathy has a great deal to offer.
Physical recovery after birth
Arnica, from the moment of birth
Arnica is the first remedy I recommend after any birth, whether vaginal or caesarean. The physical trauma of birth, the bruising, the soreness, the tissue damage, all respond beautifully to Arnica. Many midwives are familiar with its use and some actively support it. Start Arnica as soon as possible after birth and continue for several days. The difference in recovery is consistently reported by mothers who use it compared to those who don't.
Bellis Perennis, for deep pelvic soreness
When Arnica alone doesn't cover the depth of pelvic soreness after birth, particularly after a long or difficult labour, Bellis Perennis picks up where Arnica leaves off. It addresses deep, internal bruising in the uterus and pelvic tissues and is a gentle, underused gem in the postnatal toolkit.
Staphysagria, after caesarean or instrumental birth
When birth has involved surgical incision, forceps, vacuum or episiotomy, Staphysagria is an important remedy. It supports healing of incised wounds and also addresses the emotional dimension of a birth that felt violating or out of control. The physical and emotional healing go hand in hand with this remedy.
Calendula, for perineal healing
Calendula in homeopathic form (or as a topical cream alongside) supports the healing of perineal tears and episiotomies beautifully. It promotes clean, healthy tissue repair and helps prevent infection.
Emotional wellbeing in the postnatal period
The baby blues, postnatal depression, postnatal anxiety and the more severe postnatal psychosis exist on a spectrum that many women navigate without adequate support. Homeopathy doesn't replace professional mental health care for significant postnatal depression, but it can offer meaningful support for the emotional turbulence that is so common in the early weeks and months.
Sepia, for the disconnected, exhausted mother
The most important postnatal remedy for the mother who feels flat, disconnected from her baby or partner, and exhausted beyond words. She may feel nothing when she expected to feel everything, and this frightens her. She has given so much that there is nothing left. Sepia is deeply restorative when this picture fits.
Pulsatilla, for tearfulness and needing support
For the weepy, overwhelmed mother in the early days who needs company, reassurance and warmth. The tears come easily and she feels better for being held, for sympathy and for connection. This is the classic baby blues remedy when the picture fits.
Ignatia, for grief after a difficult birth
When a mother is processing grief after a birth that didn't go as hoped, a traumatic experience, a loss, or a difficult diagnosis, Ignatia supports the emotional processing that needs to happen. Sighing, weeping, emotional swings and a feeling of not quite being able to absorb what happened are all Ignatia features.
Breastfeeding support
Breastfeeding challenges in the postnatal period are common and often poorly supported. The Breast Bestie blend and specific remedies for mastitis, blocked ducts and supply issues are covered in detail in the breastfeeding post. Don't struggle through without support.
Sleep deprivation and recovery
The chronic sleep deprivation of new parenthood is genuinely damaging to immune health, hormonal balance and emotional regulation. The Sleep blend supports the quality of sleep a new mother gets in whatever windows are available, and helps the body recover more efficiently in shorter sleep periods. It is safe during breastfeeding.
A note on seeking support
If you are struggling significantly in the postnatal period, please reach out, to your GP, your midwife, or to me. There is no badge of honour in suffering through it alone. The postnatal period deserves as much care and attention as any other stage of motherhood.
