From Fertility to Menopause with Homeopathy
Hormonal health sits at the heart of so much of what I see in clinic. Whether it's irregular cycles, fertility concerns, the emotional rollercoaster of perimenopause, or simply feeling like your body isn't your own anymore, these are the conversations I have with women every week. And homeopathy, approached well, can be genuinely transformative for all of it.
This post covers the major hormonal transitions from fertility through to menopause and the remedies and approaches I find most useful at each stage.
Homeopathy and the hormonal system
Hormones don't operate in isolation. They're deeply connected to stress, sleep, gut health, emotional wellbeing and the nervous system. This is precisely why homeopathy — which treats the whole person, not just isolated symptoms is so well suited to hormonal health.
Rather than replacing hormones or suppressing symptoms, homeopathic remedies work by supporting the body's own regulatory capacity. The goal is a system that cycles smoothly, responds well to stress, and transitions through each life stage with more ease.
Fertility and cycle support
Sepia — the depleted, disconnected woman
Sepia is one of the most important remedies for women struggling with fertility and cycle irregularity. The picture includes irregular or delayed periods, low libido, emotional flatness and exhaustion. The woman often feels like she's given everything to everyone else and has nothing left. Sepia is deeply restorative when the full constitutional picture fits.
Nat Mur — grief, control and irregular cycles
When cycles have been disrupted by grief, loss or prolonged stress and the woman tends to hold her emotions in, dislike fuss and cry in private, Nat Mur is worth exploring. Often there is dryness: dry skin, dry eyes, emotional dryness. Periods may be irregular, scanty or suppressed.
Lachesis — intensity before the period
For the woman whose symptoms are dramatically worse in the premenstrual phase and improve significantly once bleeding begins, Lachesis is often indicated. She may be intense, talkative, and highly sensitive. Hot flushes, jealousy, and a strong sense of constriction (hates anything tight around the neck or waist) are characteristic.
Pulsatilla — the changeable, yielding type
Irregular, changeable periods in a woman who is gentle, tearful and easily influenced by others. Better for fresh air and gentle movement, worse for warmth. Pulsatilla is often a beautiful remedy for teenage girls whose cycles are just establishing, and for women whose cycles have become irregular after hormonal contraception.
Pregnancy and postpartum
Sepia for morning sickness
Nausea that is worse for the smell or thought of food, not relieved by eating, and accompanied by an empty hollow feeling, this is the classic Sepia morning sickness picture. Better for vigorous exercise, which distinguishes it from most other nausea remedies.
Postpartum support
The postnatal period is one of the most important and most underserved times in a woman's life. Homeopathy can support recovery from birth (Arnica is invaluable here), hormonal stabilisation, breastfeeding difficulties, and the emotional adjustments of new motherhood. If you're struggling postpartum, please reach out, this is an area I care deeply about supporting.
Perimenopause and menopause
The menopausal transition is one of the most significant hormonal shifts a woman will experience and one where homeopathy can make an enormous difference to quality of life.
Sepia — exhaustion, flatness and hot flushes
Again, Sepia features prominently. The menopausal Sepia woman is exhausted, emotionally flat, and may feel indifferent to those she loves. Hot flushes, vaginal dryness, low libido and a profound desire to be left alone are all part of the picture.
Lachesis — intense hot flushes and emotional heat
Hot flushes that are intense and come in waves, worse for heat, worse on waking, and accompanied by emotional intensity, jealousy, suspicion, verbal expressiveness. Lachesis is one of the most important menopausal remedies when this picture fits.
Calc Carb — the overwhelmed, chilly type
For the menopausal woman who is feeling overwhelmed by the demands of life, easily fatigued, anxious about health, and unusually sensitive to cold, Calc Carb addresses the whole constitutional picture beautifully.
A note on constitutional treatment
Hormonal health is an area where constitutional homeopathic treatment tailored to your individual picture, yields the best results. A one-size-fits-all approach rarely serves women well here, because two women with the same diagnosis (PCOS, endometriosis, perimenopause) can have completely different homeopathic pictures and need completely different remedies.
I offer a dedicated Fertility Program for women who are trying to conceive, as well as individual consults for cycle support, menopause and postpartum recovery.
