Teething is one of those parenting experiences that can feel relentless. Just when you think you've made it through one tooth, another one starts. The sleepless nights, the drooling, the inconsolable crying, it's exhausting for everyone. The good news is that homeopathy has some of the most effective and fast-acting tools for teething discomfort, and knowing which remedy to reach for can make a genuine difference.

How do you know it's teething?

Teething usually begins around six months, though it can start earlier or later. Signs include:

  • Excessive drooling
  • Chewing on everything
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Irritability and crying, especially at night
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Low-grade fever (though a high fever is not typical of teething and should be investigated)
  • Loose stools, a common companion to teething, possibly due to excess saliva being swallowed

The homeopathic remedies I reach for most

Chamomilla — the number one teething remedy

If there's one remedy that's synonymous with teething, it's Chamomilla. The picture is unmistakable: the baby is inconsolable, furious and oversensitive to pain. They scream and arch, want to be picked up then immediately want to be put down. One cheek may be red and hot while the other is pale. They may only settle when carried and walked and even then, only briefly.

Chamomilla is also the remedy when teething is accompanied by green, watery diarrhoea. If your baby is beside themselves and nothing is working, start here.

Mag Phos — for cramping and spasms

When teething brings colicky, spasmodic pain, the kind that is better for warmth and pressure, Mag Phos is a beautiful remedy. The baby settles when held warmly against the body or when gentle pressure is applied to the jaw. This is a lovely complement to Chamomilla when the picture isn't quite fitting the full Chamomilla profile.

The Teeth blend — for when you just need something that works tonight

Choosing between single remedies at 2am with a screaming baby is nobody's idea of a good time. That's why having the Teeth blend ready before teething starts is one of my top recommendations for families with young babies.

Supporting sleep through teething

Teething and sleep disruption go hand in hand, and a run of bad nights compounds everything, for the baby and for you. The Sleep blend works beautifully alongside the Teeth blend to help settle an overtired, overstimulated baby back into a normal sleep rhythm once the acute discomfort is addressed.

A note on high fevers and teething

Mild temperature elevation can accompany teething, but a high fever (above 38.5°C) is not a teething symptom and should always be assessed by your GP or paediatrician. Don't assume a significant fever is "just teething", it's always worth ruling out infection.
